- Detail clear boundaries and guidelines for Internet access and use by staff and students at your school or district.
- State clearly that email, network and Internet access at school is a privilege and that it can be taken away if your AUP is violated.
- A written and signed user agreement should be obtained from students and their parents at the beginning of each school year. Also verify that all students and parents have read and understand your AUP
- Your AUP should explain the school’s right to limit access to any content that is deemed inappropriate.
- Make it clear that your users will be monitored and supervised (depending on age) by teachers and other school personnel and that schooI policy, including your AUP will be enforced.
- State clearly that your AUP is a part of the student discipline code and that violating it may subject students to loss of privileges or disciplinary action.
- Clearly and specifically prohibit the use of offensive language and obscenities.
- Your AUP should forbid any conduct that would be in violation of school policies if it was communicated by any other means such as harassment, substance abuse, threats, etc.
- Your AUP should identify the specific offences you wish to avoid and consequences for each violation. However, you should also include more general prohibitions for inappropriate behavior that may occur but may not be specifically covered in your AUP.
- State that users must comply with copyright laws.
- Let users know that accessing email and the Internet at school gives them no expectation of privacy or confidentiality. State clearly that periodic maintenance of school networks can include review of files, emails, other communications and usage.
- Discourage students from sharing their passwords. Make sure they know that password security is their responsibility.
- Identify sites that are off limits such as chat rooms, instant messaging protocols, peer to peer networks, and other sites that are forbidden.
- Prohibit the unauthorized scanning of images or documents.
- Prohibit the use of the system for commercial or financial purposes.
- Include a general warning that various forms of illegal behavior may be encountered on the Internet.
- Advise that the school district is not responsible for: unauthorized costs incurred by students; inaccurate information obtained on the Internet; lost work or products.
- Include an Internet etiquette document to provide guidance to users of the Internet and e-mail.
